3 Tips to Prevent Strep Throat

With the kids back in school, they are now more likely to bring home unwanted germs. One of the most common and unwelcome illnesses is strep throat. Since strep throat is a bacterial infection that is easily spread, it is important that you discuss with your children how to prevent this illness. Read on for three tips on how to prevent strep throat.

  1. Wash Your Hands: Strep throat can be transmitted by the spreading of bacteria. One can contract strep throat through tiny droplets from an infected person’s cough, sneezing, or breath, on objects that an infected person has come into contact with, or even through food. It is important to avoid contact with infected persons to prevent contracting strep throat.
  2. Practice Healthy Habits: Practicing healthy habits such as eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, and managing your stress can help to strengthen your body’s ability to fight off illnesses.
  3. Humidify Your Home: Humidity, or moisture in the air, helps to keep your mucous membranes moist, and therefore more resistant to bacteria. Using a humidifier, especially in the dry winter months, can assist in preventing strep throat. Remember to clean your humidifier on a regular basis in order to avoid a buildup of particles.

At Alabama ENT Specialists, we will perform a physical examination as well as a throat swab test to correctly diagnose your symptoms. In most cases, strep throat can be treated with antibiotics and should resolve within two weeks.
