Pediatric Nose and Throat Services

Have you noticed that your child has been experiencing nose or throat issues? Children commonly suffer from allergies or enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Read on to learn about these pediatric nose and throat problems and what can be done to remedy them.

Allergies

During the winter, we tend to spend more time indoors. This helps to keep us warm, but can also expose us to mold and dust mites. If children are allergic to these indoor allergens, then symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and sinus pain can occur. If a child cannot avoid exposure to their allergen, medication can be prescribed to help combat symptoms. For children who are experiencing severe allergies, allergy shots or drops can be used.

Tonsils and Adenoids

The tonsils and adenoids are located in the throat and work as the body’s defense against bacteria and viruses. Sometimes they can become infected, causing symptoms like fever, sore throat, painful swallowing, and redness or drainage in the throat.

If your child has enlarged adenoids, they may be breathing through their mouth or breath heavily. Enlarged adenoids can also cause recurrent ear infections. An adenoidectomy may help to improve your child’s breathing.

If you child has enlarged and infected tonsils in Tuscaloosa, they may be suffering from tonsillitis. Antibiotics can help to treat tonsillitis, however, if it is recurrent or if your child is experiencing abscesses around the tonsils, they may need to be removed.
