What to Expect When Recovering from a Tonsillectomy

A tonsillectomy is a procedure done to remove the tonsils. Tonsils are clusters of lymphoid tissue that is located behind your nasal passages. If your tonsils become infected or enlarged frequently, they may need to be removed.

Before getting your tonsils removed

Before getting your tonsils removed, you will want to do some preparation. Have a few sets of cozy clothes ready, and clean your sheets and bedroom. You will want to come back to a clean bedroom after the procedure, as you will be spending a good amount of time in your bed recovering. Also, ask friends or family for movies and books to borrow. You will want something to entertain yourself with while you are recovering.

Foods to eat

Since your throat will be sore during recovery, you will want to choose foods that are soft and easy to swallow. Ice water will help with the swelling, and will soothe your sore throat. Water will also ensure that your throat stay moist. Pudding, applesauce, ice-cream, sherbet, mashed potatoes, and soup are all examples of easy foods to swallow. You will want to avoid any acidic, hot, or spicy foods. You may also want to avoid drinking through straws, as the action of sipping on the straw may be painful to the muscles in your throat.

What to expect

A tonsillectomy is usually an outpatient procedure, though you will be put under anesthesia during the procedure. This procedure usually takes about an hour to complete. You will receive pain medication after your tonsillectomy, and it is advised that you lay or sleep propped up by pillows. This will help with the pain and swelling. As your throat starts to heal, you should be aware that scabs will form, but will fall off in time. You may require at least 7-10 days for recovery.
